Eneko Island - Marshall Islands - International Islands

You’ve probably not heard of Eneko Island right? Well despite being one of the most lush countries on earth, the Marshall Islands is sparsely visited. If you do make it here though it will probably be through the capital island of Majuro. And if you make it this far, then a trip to Eneko Island is a must.

What’s the story with Eneko Island?

The Marshall Islands are a whole heap of tropical islands an atolls that look simply stunning when you arrive. These include the capital Majuro, some tropical retreats, as well as more controversial ones like Bikini Atoll, which was used for nuclear testing.

St among the almost constant islands and atolls as you leave by boat from Majuro is Eneko Island, a real piece of paradise and a street day out form Majuro.

The island itself is owned by Robert Reimers, the owner of the Robert Reimers Hotel and he holds what seems to be the exclusive rights to visit here, inclusive of the boats. You can still visit if you are staying at the Marshall Islands Resort, but you will have to go through the other hotel. Yes, there are two hotels in Majuro and that is it!

What is there to do on Eneko Island?

A small island it has a tropical beach on one side and rocks on the other. There is volleyball, snorkelling, kayaks and even bungalows operated by the hotel for day-trippers and overnighters.

And to add to this paradise? Theres fruit growing everywhere, as well as an abundance of fish. If I were to get marooned on a desert island it would be here, rather than say Deception Island.

Was Eneko Island a country?

No, it was not and this was a myth partly perpetrated by me. In the 1990’s there was a fraudulent fake-country called the Kingdom of EnenKIo, I thought they sounded similar enough, so put them as the same place.

In fact the “real” Kingdom of Enenkio actually alludes to the unicoprapted US territory of Wake Island. We might one day give them an article, but today is not that day.

Can you buy Eneko Island?

The island is privately owned, so if you are US citizen, or Marshallese then technically the island could be purchased. It does not though appear to be in the plans of the Reimers family as of now.
