Väheloo Island, Estonia is another gem that we found in our initial search for an island, and one of the cheapest. The price when we visited was officially “negotiable” back in 2019, with one only assuming it is even more so now with the tensions in the region.
Yet while it is a very cheap island, there are a few reasons for this, which we will delve into.

Location of Väheloo Island, Estonia
A mere 80km from the capital city of Tallinn it is not only served well by a number of international routes, but also is part of the Schengen zone, meaning free movement at least for European Union and European Economic Area (EEA) citizens and residents.
The island itself is easily accessible by car, as well as by bus from the nearby towns of Viinistu and Parispea, both towns having enough restaurants, bars and the like to keep you entertained
What is Väheloo Island, Estonia like?
With a size of just one hectare it is not huge, which is reflected in the price. It does though have some ricks and a few cedars on it, as well as a decent cell=phone signal and thus internet.
So, we’ve established it is great value, so why not just buy it then? Well here in lies the issue, from what we could gather at least there are some issues with regards to building on the island.
What can you do with Väheloo Island, Estonia?
With the climate of the island being Northern European rather than tropical you would be heavily restricted by weather. You could though do activities such as kayaking, fishing, hiking and bird watching – in the summer at least.
Day trips, boat trips and of course fishing expeditions could also be an option. Amazingly winter retreats in harsh conditions are now apparently a thing, so there’s always that.
Can you build on Väheloo Island, Estonia?
Here in lies the main drawback when it comes to purchasing Väheloo Island, essentially and from what we aware the island has been set aside for agriculture which means you cannot simply build a resort.
Of course things like this can be gotten around, but it would add extra costs onto the small island.
