Lets Buy Greenland! Just kidding lets not buy Greenland. Why not? Well it is kinda owned by Denmark, even more so owned by the people of Greenland and well, we really couldn’t afford it anyway.

When did Lets Buy Greenland recently become a thing?

In 2019, a year after we had founded Lets Buy An Island President Trump stated his desire to buy Greenland.

Why did he want to do this? Well there were many reasons from geographic, to economic, but probably most importantly for defence. As to the “why” did he think he could buy it? Well he’s Donald Trump, so expansionism and thinking that the the world is stuck in the 1800’s where you could buy Alaska for a nickel is about his level.

How much did Trump want to buy Greenland for? No firm offer was made, but to give some context on how bat-shit crazy this was estimates went from $200 million to $1.7 trillion…..

Trump did not invent “Lets Buy Greenland”

While Trump has been painted as a crazy nut for wanting to do this, it was not his original idea. In fact America have enquired about buying Greenland since 1867, then again in 1910, 1946 and lastly in 2019.

Even during the lean years it has always been a point of conversation. Why? Again mainly economic and military, but also the simple fact that America have used bullying and buying combined to get a lot of their territory, including in the Caribbean and of course remember the Louisiana purchase!

Can you buy Greenland?

In short, no you can’t, although we did briefly own the domain AND take our flag of Islandia to Greenland, to show solidarity not to claim it you understand.

Of course did this very tongue in cheek. Also and ignoring the Danish and Greenlandic element when prices like $1.6 trillion are thrown about you realise this is no cheap island to buy.

Sadly if global warming continues Greenland could well end up being less frozen, more habitable and well full of precious stuff. People really care about resources. Technically after all Greenland is the biggest island in the world.
