Background to Snake Island Brazil

Snake Island, or to give it is proper nomenclature Ilha da Queimada Grande is an Atlantic Island off of the coast of Brazil, specifically the state of Sao Paulo. It is not all that big and no one lives here. It does though have a heck of a lot of nature, yep you guessed it snakes.

The island is the only natural home of the critically endangered, venomous Bothrops insularis. Said snakes got stuck there thousands of years ago circa end of an ice-age, they feast on birds of which there are lots of them.

So, what about this snake then? Actually the venom of it has not really been “tested”on humans, but similar snakes have killed people and a bite will give you an estimated 7 percent chance of death, without treatment.

Can you buy Snake Island, Brazil?

No you cannot and its designation as a protected zone means you cannot even travel here. Smugglers do come here though, as well as poachers, although they have to dodge the Brazilian navy to get here.

This would be a poor choice of island purchase even were it available though to be fair!
